Welcome to another week of DIY Wednesdays! I have to apologize for not sharing a post with you last week because unfortunately I had a circumstance that hindered my posting schedule a bit. However, I’m back this week to share with you a DIY recipe that will help you to maintain your beautiful curls and retain your length. On this episode I will be sharing a tried and true recipe that has helped many women to regrow their hair while enjoying thicker and healthier curls over time. It’s the Onion and Ginger Hair Regrowth Mask recipe.
Onion and Ginger Benefits For Your Hair
Ginger is an all round healthy and uplifting ingredient/food, but it is also great for the hair. It has antibacterial properties that aid in relieving inflammation on the scalp and in the body, and it also contributes to increasing blood circulation to the scalp (which promotes hair growth). This spicy root contain the anti-oxidant gingerol which helps to fight free radicals to prevent hair cell damage. Free radicals are responsible for extreme hair thinning and balding, but they can be controlled and/or eliminated by using ginger every so often on the scalp.
While an onion isn’t a first choice ingredient in mine or other women’s regimen due to its pungent smell, it aids in the facilitation of hair growth which is a great benefit. Onion has a high concentration of sulphur that helps with numerous hair conditions that result in thinning or hair loss. One of the major factors that result in hair loss is a lack of sulphur protein in the hair strands. Without sufficient sulphur the hair follicles become weak and the strands will be begin to release themselves from the scalp leading to balding over time.
According to a study conducted by the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Bagdad Teaching Hospital, 23 patients that were treated for Alopecia Areata with onion juice showed significant improvements in hair regrowth. The study compared 2 groups of patients, one group (23 participants) was treated with onion juice while the other (15 participants) was treated with a placebo (tap water). After 2 weeks 73.9 % (17 participants) from the first group showed progress, and after 6 weeks hair regrowth was reported in 86.9 % (20 participants) from that same group. The second group only saw improvements in 2 participants after 8 weeks.
Combining onion and ginger will provide the hair with the essentials to safely regrow and strengthen itself while also adding shine and thickness. Let’s take a look at the recipe!
Onion and Ginger Hair Regrowth Mask
- 2 tbsp Jamaican Black Castor Oil
- 3 tbsp Fresh Sliced Ginger Root
- 3 tbsp Fresh Sliced Onion
- 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 5 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil
- 5 Drops Tea Tree oil
- Food Processor/Blender
- Combine all ingredients in your food processor/blender.
- Puree into a smooth paste.
How to apply:
- Apply the mixture throughout the scalp and hair.
- Cover with a plastic cap or bag.
- Leave mixture on for 45 minutes.
- Rinse mixture from the hair and proceed to shampoo and condition.
- Repeat treatment weekly until you notice improvement.
This treatment has a pungent smell thus I would recommend using it before you shampoo and condition your hair. However, if the smell does not bother you then you may do it after you shampoo and before you deep condition.
If you are trying to regrow your hair please refrain from doing tight styles such as braids, buns, ponytails, etc, or using techniques that may further cause damage to your hair. This will prevent your hair from growing even if you are using a treatment. Keep your hair in loose styles that will give your curls the freedom to grow.
Thank you for coming by for another DIY episode. I hope that this was helpful, and if so please share it with your fellow naturalistas!
