So it has been 19 months since I embarked on this natural hair journey, and a journey it has been! I got my last relaxer on October 7, 2015, and since then I have been growing out my natural curls and trying my best to give my hair the best care. But of course you will run into a few snags here and there, but that’s why it’s called a journey thus you will have a few learning experiences along the way. I big chopped on April 22, 2016 with only 3 inches of hair , and can I tell you it was a shock to my system to have practically no hair (I had bra-strap hair relaxed hair previous to the big chop).
Personally going natural has been a great experience for me so far. I learned a lot about my hair, about myself (my passions) , and I started learning everything I could about using natural ingredients/products on my hair and skin. One of the passions that I realized when I went natural was this blog! I wanted so much to share my experience, and I also wanted be able to help many like myself to fully understand how to love and care for their beautiful curls. Before going natural I wasn’t aware of many harmful chemicals that were present in many of the products that I used on my hair and skin that were potentially causing damage, so that’s why I decided to delve into natural ingredients and create homemade products that my curls would love.
Product that I use to Grow My Natural hair
There are many products available on the market that are formulated for afro-textured hair, but many contain ingredients that aren’t great for our hair. There are a few that promises benefits of wonderful oils or other natural ingredients but those ingredients are at the bottom of list. If you aren’t aware of how the ingredient lists work the ingredients that make up the bulk of that product appears at the top of the list subsequently you will receive the most benefit from those ingredients. So your hair may not benefit from the Jojoba oil that is second to last on that ingredient list.
Don’t get me wrong there are many products out there that works great for the hair and have wonderful ingredients, but it’s your job to read the list to see what they are. I have used many wonderful products that work well for my hair, but since I went completely natural I have decided to stick with all natural ingredients when I can which brings me to telling you about the products that I currently use.
Bentonite Clay, Neem, and ACV Shampoo Bar
Ingredients: Saponified Oils of Olive Oil, Neem Seed Oil, Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Bentonite Clay, Apple Cider Vinegar, Castor Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Sunflower Oil, Lavender Essential Oil, Honey, Distilled Water.
I made this shampoo bar because I wanted a cleanser that not only have great all natural ingredients but also didn’t strip away all of my natural oils. It cleans my hair, but it also makes my hair super soft and helps to preserve the moisture in my curls. I formulated this bar to nourish afro-textured curls and to preserve our natural sebum. I shampoo my hair using this bar once per week or every two weeks if I’m rocking a protective style.
